Who the fuck spends ~$25,000 on their first car? Take out a zero and that’s a more appropriate starting budget, with a bit of wiggle room.

Kinja'd!!!

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! This is the ideal first car.

Is it reliable? Yes.

Is it cheap to buy? Yes.

Is it cheap to keep running? Yes.

Is it cheap to insure? Yes.

So far most of the comments are looking okay, but I just know that the most “Jalop” cars will make the list.

I spent ~20,000 on my first car. Well, the first car that I purchased with my own money. The first car I ever drove full time was a hand-me-down.

Irresponsible parents, that’s who. Especially when they’re spending that money on performance cars.

I can think of at least a few people on here, and dozens of people at my school. Granted, I go to a rich school. It’s a lot, but not unheard of.

I love how pretty much all the posts are “$25,000 is stupid so fuck your question here is some $2,500 beater I like”.

Some kid who went to high school with me got a brand-new Mercedes as his first car and immediately wrecked it. Had it been a $2000 beater, the damages would have been far less severe.

My kid needs a safe new car. Here I’ll buy him the 2009 335i sedan. the salesmen said it has side impact airbags, and German cars are the safest. (has no clue it has about 300hp and is rear wheel drive.)

I mean, I bought my first car at 22 for $20K+. Parents would have to be crazy to spend that much money car for their teen though. They will crash it.

First time car owner . Most people’s first cars are owned by their parents, or at least are purchased with significant help from the parents. I think that EbayOTD is talking about the first car you purchase unassisted.

But I agree with you though.

I think everyone knows this “person” in high school. When I was in HS there was a kid with a brand new Range Rover! His parents even had it repainted blue because he didn’t like the grey that it came in. They re-sprayed a brand new Range Rover!!!!

That seems like a reasonable time to spend 20 grand on a car. not 16.

Keep in mind, I got my license when I was 20, graduated from college at 21, and got a job like 3 months out of college.

So my timeframe for “first car” is relatively equivalent to a lot of other folks. Just delayed.

I’ve not been able to find a good example, but my first car was a Mazda Protege 5. I paid around 10k 10 or so years ago. It was super slow but it never gave me any trouble all the way up until I went head on with a Ford Explorer:(

I’m 100% with you. This here is America, and in America we drive shitty cars until we’re no longer shitty drivers. Most of us suck at driving until we’re about 30 (though we usually don’t realize that until we’re almost 40).

I got a hand-me-down Mazda 626 about a year and a half after getting my license from my parents. My dad had just moved up in corporate world and got his first company car, so it wasn’t “needed” anymore and a Japanese car with over 200k kms is worth zilch in Germany.

Perfect first car! Loved it so much that I bought an almost identical one with lower kms when it died.

nah. by the time you purchase your own car you’re not giddy about traveling to the store by yourself . this is a ‘challenge’ to find a car for a 16-18 year old.

For all that it’s *kind of* a ridiculous choice, it’s way more practical than it seems, though. The bodywork is single-layer steel for the most part, of heavy enough gauge that minor dents and booboos can be dealt with. Any parking lot bumps to the bumper can be pulled. The engine is small and weak enough that it isn’t going to go flying into things at a hundred plus sideways and backwards without effort, it’s fun to drive, comfortable, thoroughly unique, and *scary* enough that someone young driving it will be cautious. It has good visibility, isn’t that huge, has room for a bunch of stuff, doesn’t have anything to aid distracted driving, and most importantly, is classy as shit. It stands out enough other drivers will give it a wide berth and brightly colored and chromey enough it won’t be overlooked. Mechanically simple, with few parts to wear out and a surprisingly big replacement industry. And it’s not expensive!

True. But that’s the only line in the whole thing that made me question my above interpretation. But then again, when I bought my first car a month ago, even at the age of 25, I wanted to try everywhere for whatever reason.

The carb is a simple one and might just need to be swabbed out if left sitting. Points might be a problem, but there are probably electronic ones available. I see this as being a good car to learn how mechanical stuff works from, anyway.

Instead of getting my sister or myself used cars, my parents just bought new cars for themselves, and we have the cars they used to have. This makes a lot more sense to me, because we know what’s happened to the vehicles and we’re already familiar with how they look, drive, feel, etc. A good amount of families where I am do this too, and I don’t think any of the teens pay for their insurance. Sympathy for my parents though: insurance costs are gonna jump like crazy when I get my license in a few months.

However, for those that can’t afford new, or for those kids that don’t want mom’s 2002 Honda Odyssey EX-L, Jalop-ish cars are ridiculous. It’s best to keep it simple.

I’m 35 and currently drive a ‘98 prelude that I bought for 1800 a year and a half ago. It’s fun, it works, and I could give a shit if something were to happen to it.
